Job summary

We’re looking for an incredibly talented and creative interaction designer with 2 to 3 years’ experience to help design and implement great digitial experiences on web, mobile and app platforms for clients working to make the world a better place.

About Yoomee

Yoomee is an innovative, fast-paced agency that builds digital platforms and products for social change. Since 2005 we’ve been designing and developing online community platforms and apps for social good. We work with social entrepreneurs, non-profits, NGOs, local government and academic clients across the world to connect people together around a common cause, to inspire and motivate, and ultimately to persuade them to do something positive they wouldn’t normally do.

Our solutions are used to make the world a better place – whether it’s helping people with mental health issues, saving the lives of Mexican migrants, connecting artists in war-zones, finding solutions to crowded cities or helping young people run their own community improvement projects.

Culture

Our culture is all about having fun and getting stuff done. We're a team of 10 developers, designers, strategists and digital producers who work closely together to deliver the kind of software we’re all proud of – and we make sure we laugh a lot along the way. Being part of a small team with a startup mentality means you’ll have the opportunity to influence all aspects of our business as it grows and get involved in areas outside web development.

Our designers don't work alone in a siloed fashion, passing finished Photoshop designs to developers to implement. Instead they're expected to understand and be competent implementing designs and troubleshooting them in HTML, CSS and JQuery.

Benefits

Our staff are the centre of our universe – we provide the best tools and complete company support to help you craft amazing products to make the world a better place. To this end, the whole company is optimised for your happiness so you can do a great job. Here’s a taste of some of our benefits:

  • Based in Sheffield’s most awesome office building (The Electric Works) famed for its 27 metre drop helter-skelter
  • Designer Aeron chair and large, light and airy air-conditioned workspace
  • Apple iMac workstations
  • Office table tennis table
  • Free selection of beer and snacks in the office
  • Free coffee and hot beverages
  • Flexible working hours
  • 25 days paid annual holiday plus bank holidays
  • Secure cycle parking and shower facilities.

Person specification

You'll be a key part of the Yoomee team and will combine technical ability and skills with a creative flair. The successful candidate for this role will be:

  • A design graduate with 2 to 3 years’ experience of designing and creating digital experiences
  • Knowledgeable and experienced using Photoshop, Illustrator and other creative tools
  • Able to code responsive designs to the latest HTML5 and CSS3 standards
  • Creative and able to visualise and communicate ideas effectively both internally and to our clients
  • Good at sketching prototypes, storyboards and wireframes
  • A team player – you'll spend every day working closely with the rest of the Yoomee team
  • Motivated by achieving a great user experience, rather than just aesthetically pleasing designs
  • Comfortable working in an Agile team and delivering work in iterations
  • Thirsty for knowledge and want to improve your skills on a daily basis.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will be:

  • Responding to and interpreting client briefs
  • Developing creative solutions and ideas
  • Developing concepts into responsive sites
  • Working with developers to help code the front-end look and feel of a site using HTML and CSS
  • Supporting our Service Designers with creative input to user journeys, personas, and wire-framing
  • Contributing to company blog posts.

Minimum requirements

This could be your second job, or you might have more experience behind you – either way, your attitude and aptitude for learning is more important than your work history. Do not apply unless you have these minimum requirements:

  • Have a design ability way above average, as demonstrated by a continuous string of successful projects
  • Be goal-oriented and a self-starter who requires minimal supervision. You’re motivated, results-driven, opinionated, hate micro-management, have high levels of energy, optimism, and a “can-do” attitude.
  • Be willing to relocate to Sheffield, UK (We can help you with this, and sponsor visas where necessary).

Not essential requirements, but desirable

As well as these core requirements, our dream candidate will have experience of the following (in order of importance):

  • Ruby on Rails
